About the Rhode Island Personal Lines exam
Personal Lines is a narrower license for selling coverage to individuals and families: personal auto, homeowners and umbrella liability. Not every state offers it as a separate exam, so the states below are the ones we cover.
What it covers
- Homeowners and residential property coverage

- Cancellation, nonrenewal and notice rules
- Your state's personal lines regulations
Who takes it
Agents who sell only to individuals and households, such as captive agents at personal lines carriers.

Source: Rhode Island Insurance Supplement Examination Content Outlines, Effective Date: May 28, 2026; Pearson VUE #124001 | 05/2026. Rhode Island sells Personal Lines Producer as exam 55, a single exam in two parts — a GENERAL KNOWLEDGE outline (75 scored + 5 pretest) and a RHODE ISLAND SPECIFIC outline (25 scored + 5 pretest) — so two sections are recorded. General knowledge weights are scored-question counts and sum exactly: 10+13+28+24 = 75. STATE-SPECIFIC WEIGHTS, read carefully: areas I and II carry ordinary dotted-leader weights (10 and 5), but area III ("RHODE ISLAND LAWS, RULES, AND REGULATIONS PERTINENT TO CASUALTY INSURANCE ONLY") carries NO weight on its own heading line. The figure is printed one level down, in parentheses, on that area's ONLY subtopic: "A. Automobile insurance................................(10)". Area III is therefore recorded as weight 10 — the publisher's own number, not an inferred one — and 10+5+10 = 25, the declared scored total, which is the check that it was read correctly. The "(10)" is not repeated in the subtopic title. Area III of the general-knowledge outline runs its subtopics past Z as doubled letters (... X, Y, Z, AA, BB, CC — 29 in all); they are recorded as the publisher letters them. That outline also prints "V. Loss settlement provisions including consent to settle a loss" as a SUBTOPIC of area IV, not a new area V. (Rhode Island Insurance Content Outlines). Confirm current weights with the testing company before you book.
